Do you Need an Electric Toothbrush?

Posted on 4/10/2015 by Na Xu

A woman brushing her teeth to prevent cavities. If you are worried about the health of your teeth, you might wonder if an electric toothbrush is the better way to go. It would seem that a toothbrush that is powered will provide better results than a manual toothbrush that relies on your labor, but the answer is that they are pretty much the same.

Yes, an electric toothbrush might act a little fancier and do a little more brushing with less work, but it is all in the technique that you use. If you do not brush long enough or miss areas of your mouth, even the best toothbrush available will not work magic for you.

The Right Brushing Technique

No matter what type of toothbrush you use, you need to brush for 2 minutes, two times a day. When you are brushing for that two minutes, you need to spend at least 30 seconds in each quadrant of your mouth. This ensures that you are getting to every area of your mouth in detail, rather than rushing over one area or another, overlooking food particles that remain hidden in the crevices. As you hit every area of your mouth, you should be brushing in a circular motion with gentle pressure. If you apply too much force you could cause damage to the enamel or cause your gums to prematurely recede, which will leave you at risk for decay, infection and pain.

The key to proper oral health is brushing your teeth often enough and for a long enough period of time. It does not matter what type of toothbrush you use - it is the method that you use that matters the most.
