Stop Tooth Decay by Fighting Sugar Cravings

Posted on 8/25/2015 by Na Xu
A woman with a sugar cube in her mouth.Sugar is your mouth's worst enemy. Sure, it might taste good, but when it is left to sit on the enamel of your teeth, it eats away at it, putting you at risk for tooth decay. If your decay is left untreated long enough, you could end up needing a root canal and dental crown to make up for the amount of the enamel that you lost and the damage that went beneath the gum line.

Rather than putting your mouth at risk just to satisfy a sugar craving, try these simple tips to keep those cravings under control:

•  Don't starve your body - give it what it needs, which is five small meals throughout the day. The more evenly spaced your meals are, the more stable your blood sugar levels will remain, which makes cravings for a "quick fix" that sugar can provide, much less likely.
•  Stay occupied. Don't sit in the kitchen when you are trying to fight a craving - instead get outside, enjoy the weather, exercise, read a book, or do anything that will keep your mind occupied and off of the need to consume sugar.
•  Make sure that you are giving your body what it needs. You should be drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day and getting 6-8 hours of sleep a night. The better shape your body is in, the less it will need sugar fixes.

These simple tips will help not only your body, but your teeth too. When you consume less sugar, you are able to decrease the risk of tooth decay tremendously!
