Why Do I Have a Constant Bad Taste In My Mouth?

Posted on 7/10/2016 by Na Xu
A woman suffering from a bad taste in her mouth! If you are experiencing a continuous bad taste, there may be a larger issue at hand. A constant bad, or sour, taste is a sign that may indicate gum disease. Our office would like to see you for a dental cleaning and checkup to find that foul odor and remove it.

If you want to learn more, check out our page about gum disease. Our hygienist is happy to discuss gum disease, and tips with you to keep a healthier mouth.

Why would gum disease give me a bad taste?

Gum disease is a bacterial infection. This means that something has invaded a healthy place making it unhealthy. In the matter of your teeth, this is generally plaque that has hardened into tartar.

Plaque is a mixture of your natural saliva and food debris in your mouth. Just as food would rot if left anywhere for a period of time, it will also rot in your mouth.

If plaque is left in place, and not removed twice a day through brushing, it is susceptible to drying out and then hardening into what is known as tartar or sometimes also called calculus.

Tartar is difficult to remove and should really only be removed by our hygienist so that the enamel of your tooth is not damaged. Tartar can extend below your gum line and continue to rot, giving you that sour taste.

What can I do?

The best plan of action to remove the sour taste in your mouth is to see our dental hygienist.

With a thorough dental cleaning to remove plaque and tartar, along with some cleaning tips including proper care of your toothbrush, brushing tips and flossing tips, we can help you keep your teeth and gums cleaner.

Please contact us if you have any questions about the bad taste in your mouth.
