Why Do I Have A Dry Mouth?

Posted on 7/20/2016 by Na Xu
A man suffering from constant dry mouth!Dry mouth can be frustrating for you and damaging to your teeth. Saliva helps us chew our food, helps us digest food and helps us keep our mouths clean.

Saliva even assists in preventing infection by controlling the amount of bacteria and fungi levels in your mouth.

There are many reasons a patient may be experiencing dry mouth and there are sources that can help.

Common Reasons for Dry Mouth

The dental term for dry mouth is xerostomia, this is the condition of not producing an adequate amount of saliva. Your saliva glands may stop producing the necessary amount when medical related problems arise, including medications taken for medical purposes.

Some common disorders that can affect your production of saliva includes:

•  Diabetes
•  Alzheimer's
•  Parkinson's
•  HIV
•  certain forms of cancer

Both prescribed and over the counter medications that patients take for the above and many other issues can also affect the amount of saliva production.

What can I do to increase my saliva production?

One of the first things we would advise our patients who are taking medications is to discuss the problem with their medical doctor and see if they are able to make any adjustments to your medications to help.

In addition, there are some ways that you can increase your saliva production. Patients have found dry mouth relief from:

•  Chewing sugarless gum.
•  Sucking on sugarless hard candy.
•  Avoid smoking or chewing tobacco products.
•  Avoid the intake of alcohol products.
•  Increase the amount of water that you drink.
•  Purchase a room vaporizer to increase the amount of water in the air.
•  Focus on breathing through your nose, and not through your mouth.

All of the above options will help increase the amount of moisture in your mouth. Please contact us if you have any questions about your dry mouth.
