Brushing for Less than Two Minutes Could Harm Your Smile

Posted on 8/23/2016 by Na Xu
A woman not brushing her teeth long enough.Keeping your teeth clean and healthy is not only about brushing two times each day and flossing like you are supposed to.

It is just as much about making sure you brush long enough to provide the protection your teeth need.

If you short your teeth on how long you brush, your teeth are going to suffer for it.

While this may not do much damage if it only happens every now and again, it could lead to much bigger problems if it is an all-the-time situation. You need to make sure that each time you brush, it is for two-to-three minutes, no matter what type of toothbrush you use.

Your Teeth Need Time to Get Clean and Absorb Fluoride

Getting clean takes more than just one quick swipe over each tooth. You need to repeatedly cover each tooth from different directions to be able to sweep off the debris effectively.

You should be brushing your teeth at different angles, and you should also be using swirls to make sure that you are getting as much plaque and film off of each tooth that you can.

You also need to be able to leave the toothpaste in your mouth long enough for the toothpaste to do its job. The fluoride your teeth need has to be able to penetrate not only the film on your teeth, but also into the tooth's enamel. This takes more than a couple seconds, which is why brushing for at least two minutes is imperative for a healthy smile.

Make sure that you time yourself for at least two minutes each time that you brush, either with a clock, or by getting one of those brushes that has the timer built in. That way, you can ensure that you are getting enough cleaning time in.
