Smokeless Tobacco has its Dangers

container of smokeless tobacco If you have recently switched from smoking cigarettes to chewing smokeless tobacco, you might think you are doing yourself a favor. After all, you gave up smoking, so the dangers to your oral and physical health are gone, right? The opposite is true. Smokeless tobacco is just as dangerous if not more dangerous than smoking cigarettes; it still puts you at risk for cancer and it is very detrimental to your oral health.

Smokeless Tobacco and your Oral Health

Smokeless tobacco is known for more than lung cancer; it can also cause cancer of the mouth, tongue and even the voice box because it is swallowed rather than inhaled. In addition, users of smokeless tobacco are at risk for leukoplakia, which are white patches in the mouth. Leukoplakia on its own is typically harmless, but they have a high tendency of becoming cancerous and are sometimes known as precancerous cells. Smokeless tobacco can also affect your gums, causing them to recede, which puts you at risk for sensitive teeth, gum disease and even lost teeth.

If these reasons were not enough to convince you not to use smokeless tobacco, it can also cause you to have discolored teeth and bad breath. Many people experience the inability to taste or smell things like they used too and many patients suffer an increased amount of cavities simply because smokeless tobacco contains sugar in order to enhance its taste.

Your best alternative is to quit all forms of tobacco in order to save your oral health. You will realize a decreased risk of tooth decay, gum disease and most importantly, a decreased risk of oral cancer.
