Dental Implants vs Dentures

Dental implant dentures Healthy Family Smiles Dental Salem OR dentistIf you have some missing teeth and you are trying to figure out what is the best way to replace those teeth, you have two main options: dental implants and dentures. Each of these solutions has merit, but not all of them are right for every mouth. The best way to figure out which option is going to be best for your mouth specifically, is to look at what each solution offers and then talk with your dentist. Here is a breakdown of the good and the bad about both options.

Dentures – Both Partial and Complete

These are the main reasons that dentists suggest getting dentures for missing teeth:
•  Dentures are a cost effective way to replace missing teeth
•  They are able to easily be adjusted whenever necessary
•  They do not require surgery to place them
•  Newer dentures look incredibly natural, and preserve the look of your face
•  Insurance will typically pay for most, if not all, of a set of dentures

These drawbacks to dentures tend to make dentists advise against getting dentures in favor of dental implants:
•  Dentures tend to slip and slide around in your mouth
•  Dentures can be irritating to the inside of your mouth
•  The acrylic does not look natural as your gum tissue when you smile
•  They require daily maintenance and a period of time where they are left out of the mouth so it can recover
•  Your diet may be restricted when using dentures, depending on which foods you normally eat
•  Dentures can break if they get dropped

Dental Implants – For Single Teeth and Full Mouth Replacements

Here are some of the reasons that dentists tend to choose dental implants:
•  When properly taken care of, dental implants can last for 10, 20, or 30 years, sometimes more
•  Dental implants are quite durable and are difficult to break under normal circumstances
•  Since your gum tissue is where the implants are posted, your smile looks very natural
•  Once implants heal, they do not irritate gum tissues much, if at all
•  Implants are easy to care for with simple brushing twice each day, and flossing at least once a day

These are some of the drawbacks to getting dental implants:
•  Dental implants require surgery to put in
•  Some dental implants require multiple surgeries to ready the site before the implant can even be placed
•  These are the more expensive alternative to help when you have missing teeth
•  Insurance rarely pays for a full set of dental implants
•  Adjustments and modifications are more difficult to make on an installed implant than on a set of dentures
