Canker Sores : Dealing With the Pain

Woman with sore pain from canker soreSometimes sores show up inside your mouth that cause sudden pain or make it difficult for you to eat. Not every mouth sore is a cause for concern, but it is important to know what is in your mouth to know the appropriate method for treatment. Canker sores are harmless sores that show up periodically in the mouth. They are typically a grey bump with a red circle around them. Canker sores are not contagious and do not cause any real issues with your oral health. They can be uncomfortable though, which means you will want to know how to alleviate the pain without making them worse.

Caring for a Canker Sore

When you have a canker sore in your mouth, you need to be extra careful with anything that touches your mouth. Food and drinks that are acidic should be avoided. You should also avoid foods that are crunchy or too abrasive, as they could irritate the canker sore. If you smoke, you should cut down or even try to quit, as tobacco use is a common reason for canker sore flare ups.

In order to minimize the pain, be extra gentle when brushing your teeth. The slower and gentler that you brush your teeth, the less likely it is that you will cause pain to the area. If you need to minimize the discomfort, try rinsing your mouth with warm salt water; gently swishing the combination around your mouth for a few seconds. If the pain is unbearable, you can also take an over the counter ibuprofen in order to decrease the pain. Typically canker sores last between 1 and 2 weeks and disappear on their own.
