What’s a Deep Cleaning?
We recommend everyone come see us about every 6 months for a checkup and routine cleaning. During these visits, your hygienist will remove plaque from the surface of your teeth and from between teeth. It’s an opportunity to remove bacteria that are in hard-to-reach spots or that can’t be removed by brushing and flossing alone.
Deep cleanings are a little different. If you have gum disease or are at high risk of gum disease, a dental deep cleaning for gums might be needed. During a deep cleaning, we remove bacteria and plaque from above the gum line — the surface of the teeth normally covered by gum tissue. This “hidden” area is where gum-disease-causing bacteria love to hide.

Usually, a full dental deep cleaning for teeth and gums will be spread out over 2-4 appointments. During each visit, we’ll focus on 1 or 2 quadrants of your mouth. A deep cleaning does take a little healing time so allowing space between treatments helps you stay as comfortable as possible.
Yes, a dental deep cleaning treatment is also known as a scaling and planing treatment. Both are designed to fight gum disease.
You’ll be a little sore the day after your treatment. We usually recommend over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen. A gentle warm salt water rinse can also provide soothing relief. Most people will feel just like themselves again within 48-72 hours.
In addition to deep cleanings, you may be interested in Perio Protect. This is a treatment that allows you to fight gum disease from the comfort and convenience of your own home. We’ll make custom trays that you’ll fill with a peroxide gel and wear for about 15 minutes a day. The trays hold the antibacterial gel directly against the gum line, where bacteria love to hide. As a bonus, Perio Protect helps whiten teeth, too!
