Root Canals in Salem, OR
We fix bad toothaches fast!
Save your tooth with a root canal!
Root canals are one of the most common (and most misunderstood) dental treatments. Inside your teeth is a soft material called pulp which contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. If decay enters the pulp, it can cause severe tooth pain. It’s always best to keep your original tooth if possible, and root canal therapy allows you to save the tooth. At Healthy Smiles Family Dental in Salem, we offer fast, gentle, and effective root canal treatments that eliminate infection and pain while allowing our patients to preserve their natural teeth.
Call us at (503) 689-8936 to find out more about root canal treatments. If you have any questions and concerns we are here to help!
What to expect
Root canal treatment usually involves one to three appointments with a dentist or endodontist. After cleaning and reshaping, your dentist may seal the tooth to fill the clean canals. Depending on the tooth’as condition, some treatments may not fill the canal during the first visit. Temporary fillings will be removed on subsequent visits. If the tooth presents a compromised structure, a metal post or fiber-reinforced resin post may be used to reinforce the tooth.
Finally, the tooth will be sealed with a ceramic crown to reinforce its structure and improve its appearance.
Is a root canal better than an extraction?
Some dentists or endodontists may recommend extracting an infected tooth. We believe that if at all possible, we should try to save your natural teeth. In many cases, a root canal can both relieve pain and allow you to save your teeth. When you lose a natural tooth (or when one is extracted), your:
- Bite may become misaligned leading to headaches or TMJ pain
- Face may take on a “sunken” appearance due to bone loss
- Risk of gum disease and decay in neighboring teeth will increase
- Ability to chew and speak naturally may be affected
- Appearance and self-confidence may also be affected
All of these issues may be avoided with a root canal!

A root canal is a dental procedure used to treat infection or damage inside a tooth. It involves removing the infected pulp and cleaning the root canals. After cleaning, dentists seal the space to prevent further infection.
Most patients feel slight discomfort similar to getting a cavity filled, but no severe pain, thanks to modern techniques and local anesthesia. The procedure is meant to relieve pain caused by infection.
The veneers process typically requires two visits. The first visit involves creating digital impressions of your teeth to craft customer veneers. Temporary veneers may be placed while the permanent ones are being created. Placement and potential adjustments on shape, color, and bite are made during the second visit.
You may feel mild soreness for a few days after the procedure. Your dentist will usually place a crown on the tooth to restore its strength and appearance, allowing you to chew and smile confidently.
